Methamphetamine

Overview

Methamphetamine is a highly addictive synthetic stimulant that acts on the central nervous system and is chemically related to amphetamine, but with more potent and longer-lasting effects. It is commonly known as “meth” and is widely abused as an illicit recreational drug, though it has limited therapeutic use in conditions such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and obesity. Methamphetamine can appear as a white crystalline powder, crystals, or tablets and may be consumed orally, smoked, snorted, or injected. Due to its high abuse potential, it is classified as a Schedule II substance.

Symptoms

The effects of methamphetamine depend on dose and duration of use. Short-term use commonly produces euphoria, increased alertness, restlessness, dry mouth, sweating, dilated pupils, tachycardia, raised blood pressure, and hyperthermia. High doses may cause severe agitation, chest pain, arrhythmias, seizures, paranoia, hallucinations, stroke, coma, and respiratory distress. Long-term use is associated with severe weight loss, insomnia, mood swings, extreme paranoia, delusions, repeated infections, skin sores, and characteristic dental damage known as “meth mouth.”

Causes

Methamphetamine toxicity and dependence result from its strong stimulant effect on the brain, leading to excessive release of neurotransmitters such as dopamine and norepinephrine. Repeated exposure causes neurochemical changes that reinforce addiction and tolerance. Detection of methamphetamine in blood, urine, saliva, hair, or sweat reflects recent or chronic use, depending on the specimen. It is metabolized partly to amphetamine, which can also be detected during testing.

Risk Factors

Risk factors for methamphetamine use and its complications include substance use disorders, mental health conditions, peer influence, occupational or workplace stress, and environments where illicit drug access is common. Adolescents and young adults are particularly vulnerable. Chronic users are at increased risk of cardiovascular disease, neurological damage, psychiatric disorders, kidney failure, and legal or occupational consequences. Improper timing of sample collection, diluted specimens, and cross-reactivity can affect test interpretation.

Prevention

Prevention focuses on education, early identification, and intervention in high-risk populations. Workplace screening, clinical monitoring, and forensic testing help detect methamphetamine use and reduce harm. Public health strategies, substance abuse counseling, and rehabilitation programs play a key role in preventing long-term complications. Accurate testing, proper sample collection, and strict chain-of-custody procedures are essential for reliable results and effective clinical, legal, and preventive management.
